ABUJA — The Federal Government has moved the acquisition and deployment of two next-generation communications satellites, NIGCOMSAT-2A and NIGCOMSAT-2B, to the implementation stage following Federal Executive Council (FEC) approval .
The project, led by the Nigeria Communications Satellite (NIGCOMSAT) Limited in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, will be executed in partnership with Israeli Aerospace Industries (IAI) and Thales Alenia Space of France .
“NIGCOMSAT-2A and NIGCOMSAT-2B will strengthen our national satellite capacity, expand connectivity and support critical communications across the country,” said NIGCOMSAT Managing Director, Jane Nkechi Egerton-Idehen . She added, “Our priority is to translate this investment into measurable value for Nigerians” .
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the satellites will provide high-capacity broadband, broadcasting, enterprise connectivity, and government services, including secure communications for national security and defence . The deployment will extend digital services to underserved areas in education, healthcare, agriculture, and financial services .
According to NIGCOMSAT’s Acting Head of Corporate Affairs, Stephen Kwande, the launch is scheduled in two phases, with the first satellite expected by the end of 2028 and the second in 2029 or 2030 . The project is expected to create opportunities across the satellite value chain, reduce Nigeria’s dependence on foreign satellite infrastructure, and strengthen local expertise through knowledge transfer in satellite engineering, network operations, and cybersecurity .
