Nigeria’s 2027 Presidential Race Begins – But Credibility Is The Real Prize

ABUJA — Nigeria’s 2027 presidential campaign is now officially underway. But beneath the rallies, declarations and political rhetoric, a more fundamental contest is taking shape: who can convince Nigerians they deserve to govern?

CDA News Nigeria gathered that the APC has already moved its campaign machinery into place. President Tinubu chairs the party’s Presidential Campaign Council, Vice President Shettima serves as Vice-Chairman I, and former Zamfara Governor Abdulaziz Yari has been appointed Director-General . However, the initial composition of the council has generated significant controversy.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has described the council as a “rehabilitation centre” for individuals linked to unresolved corruption allegations . The opposition party specifically questioned the inclusion of Betta Edu, former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, and Ngozi Olejeme, former NSITF Chairman, among others . Former Minister Solomon Dalung also raised concerns about the integrity of individuals on the list, warning that allegations against them could undermine public confidence .

CDA News Nigeria reports that the opposition is attempting to shift the conversation from “How do we defeat Tinubu?” to “Why should Nigerians choose us?” . The ADC’s Atiku Abubakar has challenged President Tinubu to a presidential debate, while Peter Obi of the NDC has called for candidates to subject their plans to public scrutiny .

The central challenge for 2027 remains: the APC holds the structural advantage with 31 governorships, but nearly 80% of Nigerians believe the country is moving in the wrong direction . The election will turn on which side converts its advantage into votes.
