Nigerian Citizens Association South Africa (NICASA) has alleged the killing of a 58-year-old Nigerian cleric, Bishop Taiwo Michael Fakunle, in Johannesburg, South Africa.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that Fakunle, an indigene of Iye, Ilejemeje Local Government Area of Ekiti State, was allegedly killed on Friday, September 4, 2026, at his residence in Kensington, Johannesburg.
National President of NICASA, Rev. Frank Onyekwelu, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, saying the circumstances surrounding the cleric’s death had left his family, friends and members of the Nigerian community devastated.
According to him, two suspects allegedly gained access to Fakunle’s residence and opened fire on him, shooting him more than seven times in what he described as a horrific and senseless act of violence.
Onyekwelu expressed deep concern over the continued loss of Nigerian lives to violent crime in South Africa, describing the killing as more than an ordinary loss of life but one that had robbed a family and the Nigerian community of a precious life.
He disclosed that NICASA had reported the incident to the Consulate General of Nigeria in Johannesburg, and that a murder case had been opened at the Jeppe Police Station.
Onyekwelu called on the South African Police Service and relevant authorities to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation, demanding that all those responsible be identified, apprehended and prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
