The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has threatened to shut down public universities again, warning it may activate its suspended strike “without any further notice” unless outstanding welfare issues and the 2025 agreement are urgently resolved.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the threat followed an emergency NEC meeting held on September 5, 2026, at the union’s Abuja secretariat, with National President Prof. Christopher Piwuna signing the statement released Friday.
ASUU said lecturers are still owed three-and-a-half months out of seven-and-a-half months’ salaries withheld under the Buhari administration, alongside billions in unremitted pension and cooperative deductions, which it described as a double financial loss to members.
The union commended Abia State Governor Alex Otti for full adoption of the 2025 agreement, alongside Bauchi, Ekiti, Ogun, Benue, Yobe, Adamawa, Kebbi, Katsina and Borno, but warned governors yet to act that their universities risked an “industrial crisis of monumental proportions.”
ASUU also opened a fresh confrontation with Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke over a two-year tenure extension granted to UNIOSUN Vice-Chancellor Prof. Clement Adegbooye, calling the move illegal and a threat to university autonomy.
The union further faulted government claims of economic growth and endorsed NLC’s call for minimum wage review indexed to inflation.
