…Says Strategy Will Not Be Repeated in 2027
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has disclosed that the G5 governors allowed Peter Obi to win the South-South in the 2023 presidential election as part of an effort to reduce the votes of the then-Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Atiku Abubakar.
CDA News Nigeria reports that Wike disclosed this during an interview on TVC News on Monday.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that, according to Wike, the G5 governors calculated that the PDP was stronger in the South-South and that their problem was Atiku. “We said the PDP was stronger in the South-South and our problem was Atiku. Therefore, instead of Atiku taking it, let it go to the Labour Party,” he said.
He added that Rivers State was the only exception where they decided Obi would not win. “It was only Rivers State where we said, ‘No, we have a problem here in Rivers. Obi will not win here. If he wins, he will send a signal somewhere.’ We stopped it,” Wike said.
The FCT Minister, however, insisted that the strategy will not be repeated in 2027. “It is no longer the same scenario. I can tell you authoritatively now that Obi can’t win the South-South,” he said.
Wike’s comments come amid his ongoing defence of the cross-party Rainbow Coalition, which he says is designed to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election. He has consistently maintained that his primary political concern is Tinubu’s re-election and the continuation of the administration beyond 2027.
The disclosure adds a new dimension to the ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, particularly in the South-South and South-East, where Obi’s Labour Party made significant inroads in the 2023 polls.
