…Fire Service Contains Blaze at Liberty Junction, Driver and Child Rescued
An explosion rocked a gas refilling outlet near Liberty Junction in Kubwa, Abuja, on Sunday morning, causing panic among residents and setting off a fire that spread to nearby shops.
CDA News Nigeria reports that the Federal Fire Service, FCT Command, said in a statement that its firefighters and other emergency responders arrived at the scene at about 6:30 a.m. and contained the blaze, averting what it described as a potentially major gas explosion.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the blast shook nearby buildings, uprooted signposts, and overturned a traffic warden’s booth around Liberty Junction. At least nine shops and a police traffic post were affected by the fire before responders brought it under control.
Eyewitnesses alleged that the incident occurred at about 6:15 a.m. when a motorist, reportedly driving against traffic, crashed into the gas outlet where cylinders were stored, though the claim has not been independently verified by authorities.
The injured driver was said to have been rescued alongside a child and rushed to a medical facility, though their condition could not be immediately confirmed. Additional fire service water tankers and operatives of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) reportedly joined the response.
The incident adds to a string of at least five notable fire outbreaks recorded in Abuja since the start of the year, ranging from market blazes to petrol station explosions.
