Trump Labels Nigeria a ‘Country of Particular Concern,’ Cites Threat to Christians

ABUJA – The United States has redesignated Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC), with President Donald Trump stating the nation’s Christian population faces an “existential threat.”

The move, announced on Friday, follows intense lobbying by U.S. politicians and certain Christian advocacy groups who have described the situation as a “genocide.” The Nigerian government has firmly denied these claims, with Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar stating, “There is no genocide, now or ever, in Nigeria.”

The security crisis in Nigeria is complex, involving jihadist insurgencies in the northeast, farmer-herder conflicts in the central region, and widespread criminal banditry in the northwest. While often framed along religious lines, analysts note the violence is multifaceted and driven by competition over resources, political instability, and criminality.

Data from the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED) suggests that claims of exclusively Christian persecution are exaggerated. The group’s senior Africa analyst, Ladd Serwat, stated that Islamist violence is “indiscriminate,” and available data shows both Muslim and Christian communities have been targeted in violent attacks.

The CPC designation could lead to significant U.S. sanctions against Nigeria, including economic measures and further travel restrictions.
