AACHEN – A German court has sentenced a 44-year-old palliative care nurse to life imprisonment for murdering 10 patients and attempting to kill 27 others with lethal injections.
The Aachen Regional Court found the man guilty on Wednesday of crimes committed between December 2023 and May 2024 at a hospital in Wuerselen near Aachen.
Prosecutors said the nurse injected mostly elderly patients with large doses of sedatives or painkillers to reduce his workload during night shifts. The court determined the offenses carried “particular severity of guilt,” meaning he won’t be eligible for early release after 15 years as is normally possible.
The man, who hasn’t been publicly named, showed no remorse during the trial that began in March. Prosecutors described him as playing “master of life and death” over those in his care.
This case follows several similar healthcare serial killer incidents in Germany, including nurse Niels Hoegel who was convicted in 2019 for murdering 85 patients.
