US and Nigeria Agree on Security Cooperation Terms to Combat Terrorism

ABUJA – The Nigerian Presidency has announced a significant security agreement with the United States, establishing a framework for enhanced cooperation to address the country’s worsening security situation.

Following high-level meetings in Washington D.C. between a Nigerian delegation led by National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and senior US officials, both nations agreed to immediately implement a non-binding cooperation framework and establish a Joint Working Group for coordinated action.

According to a statement from the Presidency, the United States has committed to enhanced intelligence support, expedited processing of defense equipment requests, and potential provision of excess defense articles to reinforce Nigeria’s operations against terrorist and violent extremist groups.

The Nigerian delegation used the meetings to refute allegations of religious genocide, emphasizing that violent attacks affect communities across religious and ethnic lines. The agreement also includes US willingness to provide humanitarian assistance to affected populations in the Middle Belt and technical support for early-warning mechanisms.
