The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially declared Friday, May 1, 2026, a public holiday in commemoration of the annual Workers’ Day celebration — a globally recognised occasion set aside to honour the immense contributions, sacrifices, and resilience of workers across all sectors of the Nigerian economy and the world at large.
The declaration was made through the Federal Ministry of Interior, with the government extending warm felicitations to Nigerian workers across the public and private sectors, acknowledging their tireless commitment and dedication to the growth and development of the nation under often challenging economic conditions.
In the spirit of the occasion, the Federal Government urged all Nigerians — employers and employees alike — to use the Workers’ Day holiday as a moment of sober reflection on the dignity of labour, the importance of fair wages, the protection of workers’ rights, and the critical role that a motivated and well-rewarded workforce plays in driving Nigeria’s economic recovery and long-term prosperity.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) are expected to hold their traditional Workers’ Day rallies and processions across the country on Friday, with labour leaders anticipated to use the occasion to address pressing issues affecting Nigerian workers, including the implementation of the new national minimum wage, rising cost of living, and workplace safety standards.
Businesses, government offices, schools, and financial institutions are expected to remain closed on Friday in observance of the public holiday, with skeletal services maintained in essential sectors.
The Federal Government assured workers that their welfare remains a top priority, reiterating its commitment to creating an enabling environment for decent work, job creation, and sustainable economic empowerment for all Nigerians.
CDA News Nigeria joins the Federal Government, the NLC, the TUC, and all well-meaning Nigerians in wishing every hardworking Nigerian a happy and restful Workers’ Day 2026.
