Kremlin Talks Yield No Breakthrough as US Plans Follow-Up with Ukraine

High-stakes talks between US envoys and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow have ended without a breakthrough on ending the war in Ukraine, though both sides have signaled a willingness to continue negotiations.

President Donald Trump said his envoys—Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner—had a “reasonably good meeting” with Putin that lasted into the early hours. “He would like to end the war. That was their impression,” Trump told reporters, while cautioning that “it does take two to tango.”

However, the Kremlin said it found parts of the US peace plan unacceptable, even though the proposal reportedly includes Ukraine ceding parts of the eastern Donbas region it still holds. Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said Russia’s recent battlefield successes had bolstered its negotiating position.

“The progress and nature of the negotiations were influenced by the successes of the Russian army on the battlefield in recent weeks,” Ushakov stated.

Despite the impasse, diplomacy continues. US officials confirmed that Witkoff and Kushner are now scheduled to meet top Ukrainian negotiator Rustem Umerov in Florida on Thursday to discuss next steps.

In Kyiv, President Volodymyr Zelensky acknowledged a window of opportunity for peace but stressed that negotiations “must be supported by pressure on Russia.” The talks unfold as Russian forces continue to advance in eastern Ukraine, recently claiming the capture of the strategic stronghold of Pokrovsk.
