Ikwuano, Abia State — The Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has thrown its weight behind a lawsuit filed by the Civil Society Observatory for Constitutional and Legal Compliance (CSOCLC), seeking the disclosure of the financial records and expenditures of the state’s 17 Local Government Councils.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the opposition party also challenged the Abia State Government to account for what it alleged was over ₦800 billion paid into the accounts of the 17 Local Government Areas, insisting that residents deserve transparency in the management of public funds.
In a statement signed by the APC Publicity Secretary, Uche Aguoru, the party urged the state government to comply with court orders and publish the Local Government financial records if it had nothing to conceal. The APC argued that the lawsuit aligns with the Supreme Court’s July 11, 2024 judgment affirming the financial autonomy of Local Governments and is intended to strengthen accountability at the grassroots.
“The Abia State Government should obey court orders and immediately make public the Local Government accounts if it has nothing to hide,” the APC stated.
The party further alleged that inadequate transparency in Local Government finances has contributed to poor rural infrastructure, dilapidated schools, weak primary healthcare services and youth unemployment.
The lawsuit filed by the CSOCLC is expected to proceed through the courts. Meanwhile, the Abia State Government has the opportunity to respond to the allegations in court or through an official public statement.
