Bishop Critiques Pastor Chris’ Lavish Birthday: “Excess & Idolatry” Amid Nigeria’s Persecution Crisis

Bishop Professor Funmilayo Adesanya-Davies, Secretary of the Elders’ Council of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Ecclesiastical Affairs (NSCEA), has publicly criticized the lavish 62nd birthday celebration of Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, labeling it a “spectacle of excess” and a distortion of Christian values.

In a sharp critique, the bishop contrasted the event’s reported opulence—luxurious gifts, grand decor, and massive spending—with the severe hardships faced by millions of Nigerians, including widespread poverty and the ongoing persecution of Christians. She argued that such displays dangerously resemble idolatry, shifting focus from the worship of God to the veneration of a leader.

The statement highlighted the stark inequality in Nigeria, where reports indicate thousands of Christians have been killed in attacks this year alone. Bishop Adesanya-Davies questioned the timing and message of the celebration, suggesting it reveals a disconnect between some church leaders and the suffering of their congregation.

The bishop called for a return to humility, simplicity, and active compassion, urging Christian leaders to prioritize supporting persecuted communities over celebrating wealth. She also challenged the “prosperity gospel,” often associated with Pastor Oyakhilome, for potentially implying that material success is a sign of God’s favor, thereby overlooking the plight of the vulnerable.

The critique concludes with a call to action, emphasizing that ending violence against Christians and supporting the persecuted should be the primary focus for the church in Nigeria today.
