Civil Society Group Faults Postponement of Fuel Import Duty

ABUJA – The Nigerian Coalition of Civil Society Organizations (NCCSO) has strongly criticized the government’s decision to delay a planned 15% import duty on petrol and diesel.

In a recent statement, the coalition described the deferment to 2026 as a “setback” for the country’s goal of energy self-sufficiency.

The group argued that the move primarily benefits fuel importers and could harm the development of local refineries, including the Dangote Refinery and modular plants.

“The government must resist pressures from international traders and remain steadfast in its commitment to achieving energy independence,” the NCCSO stated.

They urged President Bola Tinubu to protect local industries from external influence and called for close monitoring of fuel imports to prevent market distortion during the deferment period.
