LAGOS, NIGERIA – A female drug convict collapsed dramatically in the courtroom shortly after she was handed a lengthy prison sentence by a Federal High Court in Lagos on Thursday.
The convict, whose name was withheld pending family notification, was found guilty of drug trafficking charges by Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke. She collapsed immediately after the judge pronounced the sentence, prompting court officials and security personnel to rush to her aid.
She was revived and given medical attention within the courtroom before being taken to the hospital for further evaluation. Court sources confirmed that she was in stable condition following the incident.
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) had arraigned the convict alongside others on charges of conspiracy and unlawful possession of prohibited substances. The court found her guilty after a full trial.
Her defense counsel pleaded for leniency, citing health grounds, but the judge maintained that the gravity of the offense warranted a custodial sentence.
The incident has sparked discussions about the health and mental well-being of convicts during judicial proceedings, with legal advocates calling for improved medical support within court premises.
