The Imo State Government has posthumously honoured former Military Governor, late Commodore Amadi Guy Ikwechegh, with the prestigious Grand Service Star of Imo State (GSSI) award as part of the state’s 50th-anniversary celebrations.
Governor Hope Uzodimma presented the award and an honorary state citizenship to the family during the golden jubilee event themed “A golden jubilee of resilience, renewal and divine alignment” in Owerri on Monday. The honours were received by his nephew, Hon. Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, Member representing Aba South/Aba North in the House of Representatives, who is the family’s sole living member currently serving in government.
The late Commodore Ikwechegh, who served as Military Governor of Imo State from 1986 to 1989, was recognized among other past leaders for his foundational contributions to the state’s development. A distinguished naval officer, he was trained in Nigeria, England, Australia, and the United States, and served in strategic command and intelligence roles, including as Commander of the Naval Task Force for ECOMOG in Liberia.
The award highlights the continuing legacy of public service within the Ikwechegh family and commemorates the leadership of those who helped shape Imo State over the past five decades.
