Ini Edo Pleads With Film Censors Not to Pull ‘A Very Dirty Christmas’ From Cinemas

Nollywood actress and filmmaker Ini Edo has appealed to the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) and the public not to withdraw her new movie, A Very Dirty Christmas, from cinemas amid controversy surrounding its title.

In an emotional video shared on her Instagram page, the actress insisted that the film does not ridicule Christianity or demean the Christian faith, urging critics to watch the movie before passing judgment.
“Please don’t pull my film. Let people watch it first. If it dishonours God or Christians in any way, I will personally withdraw it,” Edo said.

She explained that the controversy was centred on the movie’s title rather than its content, stressing that the film focuses on family conflicts and secrets, not religion. Edo also apologised to anyone offended by the title, maintaining that there was no malicious intent.

The actress disclosed that the movie, which is currently showing in over 70 cinemas nationwide, involved significant financial commitments from investors and distributors, warning that withdrawing it would result in major losses.

Edo confirmed that the NFVCB had requested a modification of the film’s title following concerns raised by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and expressed willingness to comply, while appealing for time to make the changes.

The NFVCB, in an earlier statement, said it was guided by public interest and existing regulations, adding that it retained the power to withdraw films if necessary.
“I am a Christian, and Christians are not the people I want to offend,” Edo said, reiterating her plea for understanding.
