Lagos Pledges Flood-Free State, Orders Immediate Evacuation of Sanitation Waste

The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a flood-free state, ordering the immediate evacuation of black spots and all drainage channels and canals across the state.

The directive was announced by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, in a statement on Saturday, April 25, 2026, as global climate models pointed to the development of the La Nina phenomenon in the second quarter of the year.

“The position of the government is clear: all black spots, all collectors, all drainage channels and canals must be evacuated immediately to ensure all parts of Lagos are flood-free,” Wahab stated.

La Nina Alert and Flood Risks

Wahab noted that La Nina could bring heavy rainfall and potentially devastating flooding to the coastal state. In response, the government has reactivated its flood risk register and released updated seasonal rainfall predictions for 2026.

Across the state’s five divisions, the government has intensified dredging of major drainage channels and enforcement against deliberate blockage of the water system.

Public Cooperation Required

The Commissioner emphasized that enforcement and evacuation efforts would be fruitless without the active cooperation of residents. He appealed to the public to stop dumping refuse into drains and canals and to desist from building on drainage rights-of-way.

“If we all do the right thing, we can achieve our goal of a flood-free state,” Wahab added. He also urged residents to call the 767 quick-complaint toll-free number to report any environmental violations.

The government also directed the immediate evacuation of drainage channels at Iyana-Isolo and Ikotun yesterday.
