Senator Adams Oshiomhole has faulted the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, over his stance on the use of firearms against armed criminals, insisting that security operatives should shoot such suspects on sight, CDA News Nigeria reports.
CDA News gathered from the report that the Edo North lawmaker made the remarks during an interview with TVC News on Monday, questioning why the IGP appeared apologetic over the shooting of criminals.
“If you see a criminal, shoot on sight,” Oshiomhole said, reacting to the police force’s earlier clarification that Disu had not issued a “shoot-on-sight” directive but was instead referencing Force Order 237, which governs the legal conditions under which officers may deploy firearms.
The police force had explained that Disu briefed stakeholders on the order’s provisions and the Rules of Engagement guiding the use of firearms by officers.
Asked about President Bola Tinubu’s biggest political risk ahead of next year’s election, Oshiomhole described insecurity as the only obstacle standing in the way of the President’s re-election bid. He urged Tinubu to set a firm deadline for the service chiefs to end insecurity nationwide.
He further called for measurable benchmarks to assess military performance against resources provided, insisting the President should hold service chiefs firmly accountable for results.
