Oyo Protests Go Nationwide, NASS Moves on State Police

Abuja – The abduction of over 80 schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo and Borno states has sparked nationwide protests, forcing the National Assembly to fast-track the creation of state police .

On May 15, 2026, gunmen abducted 39 pupils and seven teachers from three schools in Oyo State’s Oriire LGA, killing one teacher. Simultaneously, 42 students were taken in Borno’s Askira-Uba LGA .

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), NLC, and NANS led protests in Lagos, Kano, Abuja, and Oyo, blocking major streets with placards reading “Secure Our Schools, Secure Our Future” . The NUT has threatened a nationwide strike if victims are not rescued urgently .

In response, the House of Representatives demanded immediate rescue operations and passed resolutions urging the Federal Government to establish state police. Senate President Godswill Akpabio observed a one-minute silence for the victims, describing the incident as “an attack on our collective humanity” .

Governor Seyi Makinde assured protesters that security agencies are intensifying efforts, while FCT Minister Nyesom Wike warned against turning the crisis into “political football” .
