ABUJA, NIGERIA — Saudi Arabia has officially declared Friday as the day for Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan.
The announcement followed the sighting of the Shawwal moon, which signifies the conclusion of fasting for Muslims worldwide. As is customary, many countries align their Eid celebrations with Saudi Arabia’s declaration, while others rely on local moon sightings.
In Nigeria, Muslims are awaiting the official announcement from the Sultan of Sokoto, who serves as the spiritual head of Muslims in the country. The Sultan’s declaration will determine the official date for Eid-el-Fitr celebrations across Nigeria.
The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) typically advises Muslims to observe the moon locally before confirming the end of Ramadan.
Religious leaders have urged the faithful to remain patient and await the Sultan’s directive, emphasizing unity and adherence to established religious procedures.
Eid-el-Fitr is one of the most significant celebrations in Islam, marked by prayers, charity, and communal gatherings.
The festival also symbolizes gratitude, reflection, and renewed spiritual commitment after a month of fasting.
As anticipation builds across the country, security agencies and community leaders are also preparing to ensure peaceful celebrations once the official announcement is made.
