Umuariaga Oboro, Abia Govt Hold Constructive Talks Over Land

IKWUANO, ABIA STATE – A constructive engagement was held between the Abia State Ministry of Lands and the people of Umuariaga Oboro, led by their legal counsel, Barrister Monday Ubani (SAN), over concerns regarding a proposed government development project.

The meeting, which ended on a positive note, saw both parties agree to reconvene next week for further deliberations.

Bar Ubani highlighted the community’s longstanding contributions to government projects, particularly through the National Root Crops Research Institute and Michael Okpara University of Agriculture. He stressed that the land in question is the only accessible flat area available to the community and appealed to the government to explore alternative sites for the intended development.

He further urged the government not to concentrate development solely in the Umuariaga axis, suggesting that attention also be given to his village, Awaukwu, where the community is ready to provide land for such projects.

The Commissioner for Lands, Hon. Chaka Chimereije, delivered a clear message that as part of the urban area, the community must embrace the opportunities that come with growth. He emphasized that rather than resisting development, active engagement and negotiation are key to securing lasting benefits.

Both sides expressed commitment to dialogue and mutual understanding as discussions continue.
