Wike-Led PDP BoT Backs State Congresses, National Convention

ABUJA, NIGERIA — The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has thrown its weight behind the party’s forthcoming state congresses and the national convention scheduled for March 29 and 30, 2026, describing the exercises as critical to repositioning the opposition party .

Speaking after the BoT meeting in Abuja on Wednesday, the Board Chairman, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, expressed optimism that the state congresses scheduled for the weekend would strengthen the party’s structures nationwide and deepen internal democracy .

“We are optimistic that the state congresses scheduled to take place this weekend will further consolidate this process and strengthen our party structures across the federation,” Ohuabunwa said .

He disclosed that preparations were in an advanced stage for the party’s National Convention slated for March 29 and 30, which he said would provide an opportunity for the party to further reposition itself and reaffirm its commitment to democratic principles, unity, and national service .

The BoT chairman also acknowledged recent judgments of the Court of Appeal, which he said affirmed the legality and authority of the party’s National Caretaker Committee led by Alhaji Abdulrahman Mohammed .

“These judicial pronouncements have provided much-needed clarity and stability within the party. As a law-abiding political organization, we respect the decisions of the courts and will continue to conduct our affairs in accordance with the rule of law and the provisions of our party constitution,” Ohuabunwa added .

‘Enough of Litigations’

Addressing the meeting, the Chairman of the National Caretaker Committee, Alhaji Abdulrahman Mohammed, called on party members to end prolonged legal disputes and focus on reconciliation and strengthening the party ahead of the 2027 general elections .

“The court has once again affirmed that the rule of law must prevail in our party’s internal affairs. I call on all stakeholders and leaders to unite for the progress of the party. Enough of litigations that could delay our activities towards the 2027 general election,” Mohammed stated .

He reassured aspirants seeking to contest elections under the PDP platform that the leadership crisis would not affect their chances, noting that the caretaker committee remains the only legitimate body recognized by law to field candidates .

Emphasis on E-Registration

The BoT also stressed the need to strengthen the party’s membership base through its ongoing electronic registration initiative, which Ohuabunwa said would modernise the party’s membership system, improve transparency, and create a reliable database of members nationwide .

“The Board therefore urges all State Chairmen and Zonal Chairmen, working in collaboration with other party leaders at all levels, to intensify efforts in mobilizing and encouraging members across the federation to participate actively in the e-registration exercise,” he said .

Call for Unity

Ohuabunwa further called on party leaders and members to approach internal deliberations with maturity and unity, noting that the PDP has historically overcome challenges .

“Our party has faced challenges before, yet history has repeatedly shown that the PDP possesses the resilience, depth, and national spread required to overcome difficulties and emerge stronger,” he said, urging members to embrace reconciliation and work collectively toward strengthening the party .
