The Governor of Zamfara State, Dauda Lawal, has revealed that he refused to pay a N300 million ransom demanded by kidnappers who abducted two of his brothers.
CDA News Nigeria reports that the governor said he told the abductors they could carry out their threats rather than expect him to negotiate or pay a ransom for the victims.
According to Lawal, his decision was based on his administration’s policy of not encouraging kidnapping by making ransom payments. He maintained that yielding to such demands would only embolden criminal groups and worsen insecurity.
The governor reaffirmed his commitment to combating banditry and kidnapping through sustained security operations and collaboration with security agencies operating across Zamfara State.
His remarks come amid continued efforts by federal and state authorities to tackle kidnapping and violent crimes in parts of northern Nigeria.
