…Some Governors Explore Atiku Option; Tinubu Urged to Intervene
The political rift between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and All Progressives Congress (APC) governors has deepened, with some party leaders reportedly weighing alternative presidential candidates ahead of the 2027 elections.
CDA News Nigeria reports that sources within the APC said many party leaders, including some governors, regard Wike as a potential threat to President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that some aggrieved governors are opening discreet channels to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the ADC presidential candidate, as a counterweight to Wike’s growing Rainbow Coalition. The governors cited as unhappy include those of Ogun, Kwara, and Imo states.
The crisis escalated after Wike declared on TVC’s Journalists’ Hangout that he would never support Imo Governor Hope Uzodimma’s reported Senate presidency ambition, alleging that Uzodimma’s opposition to the Rainbow Coalition was driven by personal political interests.
Uzodimma, who chairs the Progressive Governors’ Forum, had earlier declared that APC governors would not support any alliance capable of weakening the party or affecting its candidates at any level.
Political analyst Prof. Hassan Saliu and former APC Organising Secretary Eze Duru said President Tinubu needs the support of both Wike and the governors, urging him to reconcile the various interests. Sources said the APC National Working Committee is awaiting Tinubu’s directive before deciding its next course of action.Â
