The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has commended the Department of State Services (DSS) for directing that the alleged cyberbullying case against African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, be put on hold until after the 2027 presidential election .
The student body described the decision as a necessary step to protect democratic participation and prevent the use of state instruments to suppress political opposition. NANS also called on other security agencies to emulate this approach and ensure that the 2027 election is free and fair.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the DSS directive was issued following a meeting on August 20 involving DSS Director-General Tosin Ajayi, the service’s private counsel, Akinolu Kehinde, SAN, and officials of the agency’s Legal Directorate . The suspension of the case is expected to keep the matter on hold until after the polls.
The development comes amid a broader debate over the use of legal proceedings against political opponents in the run-up to elections. Critics have previously raised concerns about the potential misuse of state security agencies to target opposition figures.
Sowore’s case is one of several high-profile legal battles involving opposition politicians, fuelling concerns about the fairness of the political playing field as the nation prepares for the 2027 general elections. NANS’ endorsement of the DSS’s move suggests a growing expectation that security and law enforcement agencies will uphold their constitutional responsibilities without overreach, as the country navigates the electoral season.
