Heavy tension has gripped Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State following the death of 24 persons, mostly youths, over the weekend from suspected poisoning linked to locally brewed alcoholic drinks and sachet concoctions.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the deaths occurred across Odigbo and Araromi-Obu communities, prompting the local government to impose an immediate ban on the sale and consumption of locally produced alcoholic beverages pending further investigation.
Several other affected persons are currently receiving treatment in hospitals, with medical personnel working to stabilise them.
Ondo State Commissioner for Health, Dr Banji Ajaka, confirmed the incident, stating that investigations were ongoing to determine the exact cause of the fatalities. He did not disclose the specific substance suspected to be responsible, noting that further assessments would be carried out in the affected communities.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr Ayodele Adeji, disclosed that early findings pointed to possible methanol contamination, though laboratory analysis of collected samples was still in progress.
Odigbo Local Government Chairman, Taiwo Adegoroye, said preliminary findings from the council’s health team suggested a possible link between the deaths and the consumption of the affected substances.
