5 Countries That Pay You to Move There in 2026

From Alpine villages to Mediterranean islands, these nations are offering cash incentives to attract new residents.

‘Pay to move’ schemes are gaining traction worldwide, with several countries offering financial incentives to attract new residents to communities facing population decline and economic challenges. These programmes offer a genuine opportunity for those seeking a fresh start, provided they meet the eligibility criteria.

Here are five countries offering relocation incentives in 2026:

1. Albinen, Switzerland

The picturesque mountain village of Albinen has been offering incentives since 2018 to tackle its dwindling population. Adults can receive up to 25,000 Swiss francs (approximately £23,600), with children receiving up to 10,000 Swiss francs (roughly £9,400). A family of two adults and one child could receive a total of 70,000 Swiss francs (around £66,100).

Conditions: Applicants must be under 45, commit to living in Albinen for at least 10 years, and purchase or build a property worth at least 200,000 Swiss francs.

2. Sardinia, Italy

The stunning Italian island is offering up to €15,000 (around £13,000) per household to revitalise rural communities with populations under 3,000. The grant doesn’t require repayment and is intended to help with buying or renovating a home.

Conditions: Applicants must complete their move within 18 months of purchasing a property or finishing renovation work. Additional monthly allowances are available for families with young children.

3. Greece

The remote island of Antikythera offers a remarkable relocation package: a free house, a parcel of land, and a monthly payment of €500 for the first three years to new families willing to settle there. The scheme is particularly aimed at young families and skilled workers, including builders, bakers, and tradespeople.

4. Spain

Several rural locations across Spain offer financial incentives to tackle depopulation. The Ponga villages offer €3,000 (around £2,591) to young couples willing to relocate for five years, with an additional €3,000 for each child. Remote workers can also apply for grants of up to €15,000 in the Extremadura region.

5. Chile

For entrepreneurs, Chile offers equity-free grants worth up to £74,000 to technology-based start-ups willing to establish themselves in the South American country. The scheme is open to nationals of any country and provides a two-year work visa along with access to mentors, networking opportunities, and office space.
