Lake Chad Not Shrinking, Erratic Rainfall and Irrigation Access Are Real Issues – US Professor

A US professor leading a sustainability research project in the Lake Chad Basin has dismissed widespread claims that the lake is shrinking, stating that the real challenge for farmers is erratic rainfall and limited access to irrigation.

Prof. Frederi Viens of Rice University explained that Lake Chad, which nearly vanished during droughts in the 1970s and 1980s, has since recovered and remains a viable ecosystem.

Based on surveys of 2,000 farmers across Yobe and Borno states, he noted that none cited a shrinking lake as their primary concern. Instead, they highlighted unpredictable rainfall patterns that disrupt growing seasons.

Viens emphasized that expanding small-scale irrigation using groundwater could significantly boost resilience and food production in the region.

The research aims to combine scientific data with local knowledge to guide sustainable agricultural policies and climate adaptation strategies.
