KEDCO Workers Picket HQ Over Unpaid Pensions, Welfare

Electricity workers have picketed the headquarters of the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), protesting years of unpaid pension deductions and poor welfare.

The workers, under the Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies (SSAEAC) and the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), barricaded the Kano office on Wednesday. They accused management of failing to remit pension deductions for over 90 months and neglecting agreed welfare conditions.

Union leaders Comrade Rilwanu Shehu (SSAEAC) and Comrade Ado Gaya (NUEE) stated that promotions, allowances, and basic working tools have been persistently ignored, leaving staff in dilapidated conditions. They warned that the protest could lead to a blackout across Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa states.

In response, KEDCO management acknowledged the protest was linked to “legacy and current staff welfare concerns.” A statement from Head of Corporate Communications Sani Bala said the current management, in office for seven months, had prioritized welfare, paid over 80% of agreed 2025 pension remittances, and promoted about 1,500 staff recently.

The company assured stakeholders of ongoing engagement to resolve the issues and restore industrial harmony.
