Sokoto to Enforce Law Banning Extravagant Pre-Wedding Activities

SOKOTO – The Sokoto State Government has announced plans to strictly enforce an existing law that bans extravagant pre-wedding activities, in a bid to reduce the financial burden of marriage on young people in the state.

Governor Ahmed Aliyu made the pledge on Friday during the commissioning of the remodelled Zawiyatu Sheikh Aliyu Bunza Jumu’at Mosque and Islamiyya School. He lamented that costly pre-wedding demands and lavish ceremonies have made marriage unaffordable for many, contributing to delayed marriages and potential social vices.

Aliyu noted that despite the law, many families continue to flout it through ostentatious spending. The government plans to engage stakeholders—including Islamic scholars, traditional rulers, and community leaders—to review the regulations and ensure compliance.

The governor appealed for public support in upholding the ban, stressing that simplified weddings align with Islamic teachings and reduce pressure on couples and their families.

Religious leaders at the event commended the state’s commitment to promoting Islamic values and education.
