EFCC quizzes El-Rufai over alleged N432bn fraud as FG files fresh charges

Former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai may spend the night at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) headquarters in Abuja, where investigators are questioning him over allegations of financial misconduct involving approximately N432 billion .

An EFCC source confirmed that the former governor is currently with investigators but said it was still unclear how long the session would last. “He is with our investigators, but cannot confirm how long he would be questioned, it is still early to know how long he will stay there,” the source said .

El-Rufai is under investigation over loans obtained during his administration, which a Kaduna State House of Assembly ad-hoc committee alleged were mismanaged or used without due process. He has denied the allegations, insisting they are politically motivated .

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has filed a three-count charge against El-Rufai at the Federal High Court in Abuja, alleging that he unlawfully intercepted the phone communication of National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu .

The charge, filed by a team of five prosecutors from the Department of State Services (DSS), alleged that El-Rufai admitted during a February 13 Arise TV interview that he aligned with others and unlawfully intercepted Ribadu’s phone communications, an offence contrary to the Cybercrimes Act .

By failing to report the crime, El-Rufai was said to have committed an offence punishable under Section 27(b) of the Cybercrimes Act .

In a related development, pregnant women and children were left choking after EFCC operatives fired teargas to disperse pro and anti-El-Rufai supporters clashing at the commission’s headquarters .

The teargas fumes drifted towards the nearby Federal Medical Centre, Jabi, causing distress among vulnerable patients. A pregnant woman on antenatal visit described the ordeal: “Even inside the hospital, everyone was struggling to breathe. My eyes were filled with tears, I was coughing” .

Opposition figure Umar Sani commented on the political dimension, stating that “El-Rufai has become a one-man riot squad and, unmistakably, the face of the opposition” .
