UYO, NIGERIA — The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has threatened a N1 billion lawsuit against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The legal threat follows an emergency virtual congress.
The dispute stems from a Tuesday raid at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH). Operatives allegedly assaulted Professor Eyo Ekpe. Ekpe is a prominent professor of cardiothoracic surgery.The NMA claims operatives physically beat the professor.
They also used teargas within the hospital premises. This actions caused widespread panic among sick patients.Consequently, the NMA declared an immediate, indefinite strike.
All public medical services in Akwa Ibom are withdrawn.However, the EFCC denies any physical assault occurred. They state operatives only visited to authenticate a medical report.
The suspect involved is standing trial for microfinance fraud.
They claim hospital staff attacked their officials with stones.
The Akwa Ibom State Police Command distanced itself from the raid.
They only responded to a distress call from the hospital.
The NMA vows to proceed with the suit.
They demand a public apology before resuming operations.
