Port Harcourt, Rivers State – The Rivers State House of Assembly has officially halted the impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara, bringing a temporary pause to the intense political crisis that has gripped the state in recent weeks.
The decision, announced during a plenary session on Thursday, follows interventions by key political stakeholders and the Presidency. Lawmakers stated that the move was made in the interest of peace and to allow for governance to continue uninterrupted in the oil-rich state.
“The leadership of the House, after due consultation with elders and stakeholders, has resolved to discontinue the impeachment process,” a statement from the Assembly read. “We call on the executive arm to reciprocate this gesture for the overall development of Rivers State.”
The crisis, which saw factions within the Assembly attempt to remove the Governor, had raised concerns about security and stability in the Niger Delta region. Governor Fubara has yet to officially comment on the Assembly’s latest decision, but aides described the development as “a victory for the rule of law.”
Political analysts view this halt as a pathway to dialogue, though underlying tensions between the executive and legislative branches are expected to require further reconciliation efforts.
