The African Democratic Congress (ADC) chairmanship candidate for Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Dr Moses Paul Ogigi, popularly known as Dr Mo, has reacted to the tragic death of his party’s agent, Musa Abubakar, who was killed during Saturday’s FCT area council elections at a polling unit in Gwagwa .
In a press conference following the election, Dr Mo confirmed that he has visited the family of the deceased to offer condolences and solidarity . He described Abubakar as a dedicated agent who lost his life while trying to protect the integrity of the electoral process.
“Musa Abubakar, the party agent for ADC at the Gwagwa polling unit, lost his life while trying to protect the votes. There were also instances where people changed the results from polling units, and this sad situation sadly led to his death as he was trying to defend his vote,” Dr Mo stated .
The ADC candidate further alleged that the death occurred amid attempts to resist result manipulation and ballot box hijack at the Gwagwa polling unit . He called on relevant authorities to investigate the incident thoroughly.
“I am asking the proper officials to look into this issue carefully and make sure fairness is achieved. These actions harm the fairness of the voting process and make people lose trust in our democracy,” he added .
The Obidient Movement, which supported Dr Mo’s candidacy, also mourned Abubakar’s death. National Coordinator Dr Yunusa Tanko described the deceased as “a patriot” who was “brutally murdered at his post in the Gwagwa polling unit for resisting a daring attempt by hoodlums to hijack ballot boxes and subvert the will of voters” .
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared Christopher Maikalangu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) winner of the AMAC contest with 40,295 votes, while Dr Mo polled 12,109 votes . The ADC candidate has rejected the result, citing widespread irregularities including the death of his agent .
