National Assembly Postpones Plenary Resumption to March 5 for Budget Defence

The National Assembly has postponed the resumption of plenary, earlier scheduled for Tuesday, February 24, 2026, to Thursday, March 5, 2026, to enable committees conclude ongoing budget defence sessions with Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) .

The decision was communicated in a statement issued on Monday by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana . According to the notice, the postponement became necessary as the 2026 budget defence exercise remains substantially incomplete .

“Plenary will now reconvene in both chambers on Thursday, 5th March 2026 at 11:00 a.m. Distinguished Senators and Honourable Members are kindly requested to take note of the new resumption date and time,” the statement read .

The leadership expressed regret for any inconvenience the adjustment may cause and urged members to utilise the intervening period to further refine and strengthen discourse on the ongoing budget defence .

Both chambers had initially adjourned plenary to allow standing committees to engage MDAs in detailed scrutiny of their 2026 budget estimates following President Bola Tinubu’s presentation of the ₦58.47 trillion appropriation bill in December 2025 .

Premium Times reports that upon resumption, the House will hold a valedictory session in honour of Senator Barinada Mpigi, who represented Rivers South-east Senatorial District before his death last Thursday .

The postponement comes amid heightened scrutiny of the government’s fiscal projections, with lawmakers expressing concerns over poor implementation of the 2025 budget, unpaid contractors, inadequate capital releases, and rising public debt during recent committee hearings .
