Port Harcourt, Rivers State – The political crisis in Rivers State escalated on Saturday as the office of the Chief Judge, Justice Simeon Amadi, confirmed receipt of formal documents from the State House of Assembly to constitute a panel probing allegations of gross misconduct against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy.
The Assembly’s Committee Chairman on Petitions, Dr. Enemi George, stated that all required documents, including notices of allegations and relevant newspaper publications, had been delivered and acknowledged. He urged the public to remain calm, asserting that the process follows constitutional provisions under Section 188.
However, a Rivers State High Court in Oyigbo has issued an interim injunction restraining the Chief Judge from acting on the Assembly’s request. This sets the stage for a legal confrontation over the impeachment process.
In a veiled response, Governor Fubara, speaking at a polo tournament in Port Harcourt, referred to the impeachment notice as a “love letter.” He vowed to continue governing and avoid actions that could breach the state’s peace. “We must move on and carry on the responsibilities as a government,” he stated.
The development occurs amid ongoing reconciliation efforts by a Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) committee, which has met with both FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and Governor Fubara to mediate the protracted political feud.
