ABUJA, NIGERIA — The Senator representing Sokoto South Senatorial District and former Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has officially resigned his membership from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) .
In a resignation letter dated March 11, 2026, addressed to his ward chairman in Tambuwal/Shinfiri Ward of Tambuwal Local Government Area, Sokoto State, the former Speaker of the House of Representatives cited persistent internal crises, leadership disagreements, and growing divisions within the PDP as the reasons for his departure .
Tambuwal announced his defection in the early hours of Thursday via a statement on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, confirming that he had communicated his resignation in writing before formally enlisting in the ADC alongside his associates and supporters .
“The persistent internal crisis, leadership disagreements, and growing divisions within the PDP have made it increasingly difficult to continue my membership of the party. These developments have unfortunately weakened the unity and direction that once defined the party and have necessitated this decision,” Tambuwal stated .
While expressing gratitude to the PDP for the opportunities it provided him to serve the nation—including as Speaker of the House of Representatives and as Governor of Sokoto State during his second term—he noted that the party’s internal deterioration had made continued membership untenable .
Explaining his choice of the ADC as his new political home, Tambuwal said he was convinced that the platform offers Nigeria a stronger vehicle for democratic progress.
“I am convinced that this decision is guided by my belief that Nigeria needs a stronger political platform built on integrity, accountability, inclusiveness, and a clear commitment to national development,” he stated, reaffirming his dedication to democracy, justice, and national unity .
Tambuwal’s defection is the latest in a series of high-profile exits from the PDP, following former presidential candidate Peter Obi, Senator Austin Akobundu, and several lawmakers who have also joined the ADC and other parties .
