The Abia State Government has assured the Umuariaga community of its readiness for dialogue over the proposed development of lands in the area, stating that there are no plans for forceful acquisition.
This assurance was given during a meeting between representatives of the community and the Honourable Commissioner for Lands, following a petition earlier submitted to Governor Alex Chioma Otti.
According to the Commissioner, the government’s intention is to develop parts of the land in line with its long-term development agenda, noting that Umuariaga falls within a designated capital development zone. He emphasized that the process would involve negotiations and consultations with landowners.
The community, led by Chief Sir Samuel Okereke, welcomed the government’s approach but raised concerns over historical neglect, citing previous land donations to institutions such as Michael Okpara University of Agriculture and National Root Crops Research Institute without adequate benefits.
Community leaders demanded infrastructure development, employment opportunities, and clarity on the specific areas earmarked for the project. They also called for a physical inspection and a town hall meeting to ensure transparency and inclusiveness.
The Commissioner introduced a verification process tagged “Operation Show Your Land,” where landowners would physically identify their properties for proper documentation and evaluation. He further assured that only required portions would be utilized, with unused areas returned to owners.
Both parties agreed to convene a town hall meeting after Easter to deepen engagement and foster mutual understanding.
