CAN Lagos Urges Churches to Serve as Moral Compass Amid Economic Challenges

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Lagos State Chapter, has called on churches across the country to continue serving as a moral compass and stabilizing force for the nation amid prevailing economic and social challenges .

Speaking at a media briefing in Lagos, CAN Lagos State Chairman Bishop Dr. Stephen Adegbite emphasized that the church must remain a beacon of light during these difficult times, offering hope and guidance to citizens grappling with economic strain and uncertainty .

The announcement came as CAN Lagos unveiled plans for its 2026 Inter-Denominational Divine Service (IDDS), scheduled to hold on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at The Apostolic Church Nigeria, LAWNA Territorial Headquarters, Olorunda, Ketu .

Themed “Immanuel: God With Us,” drawn from Matthew 1:23, Adegbite described the theme as both a promise and assurance for believers .

“It reminds us that in seasons of economic strain, social pressure, governance challenges, and personal uncertainty, God remains present with His people. It is a message of hope, unity, divine guidance, and restoration,” he said .

The Inter-Denominational Divine Service represents more than an annual ceremony, according to Adegbite, describing it as a spiritual convergence of believers across denominations—Catholic, Protestant, Pentecostal, Evangelical, and African Instituted Churches—united in prayer for Lagos State and Nigeria .

Guest Preacher for the gathering will be Ezekiel Babatunde Omidina, pioneer Chairman of ECWA Lagos Central District Church Council, whom Adegbite described as a seasoned spiritual leader whose ministry has impacted many lives .

Addressing the state of the nation, Adegbite acknowledged Nigeria’s ongoing economic challenges, including inflation and structural adjustments, but expressed optimism that policy measures by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu are aimed at stabilizing the economy and positioning the country for long-term growth .

He urged Christians across Lagos State to attend the sacred assembly in large numbers and invited residents of goodwill to join in seeking divine guidance for the state and the nation .
