NEC Unveils Roadmap to Achieve $1 Trillion Economy by 2030

The National Economic Council (NEC) has unveiled a comprehensive roadmap aimed at positioning Nigeria to achieve a $1 trillion economy by 2030, following the second NEC Conference held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja .

The conference, hosted by the NEC Secretariat under the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning from February 9 to 10, brought together over 350 delegates including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, state governors, ministers, lawmakers, and private sector leaders .

President Tinubu declared that Nigeria must move decisively from economic recovery to transformation, emphasizing that growth cannot be sustained without improved security and agricultural productivity. “We will overcome this unacceptable terrorism and banditry. It’s not part of our culture. It’s foreign to us,” he stated .

Central to the resolutions was the endorsement of the Renewed Hope National Development Plan (2026–2030), succeeding the 2021–2025 blueprint. Vice President Shettima described the plan as “the bridge between lessons learnt and ambitions pursued,” providing a practical pathway to the $1 trillion target .

Minister of Budget and Economic Planning Abubakar Atiku Bagudu revealed that the new plan would drive growth from Nigeria’s 8,809 wards, integrating rural development programs and constituency projects to collectively fight poverty .

NEC urged states to harmonize tax laws to eliminate multiple taxation, with Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, disclosing that 12 states have passed harmonized tax laws .

The council identified human capital development, security, and domestic production as critical enablers, urging states to increase per capita spending on education and healthcare .

World Bank Country Director Mathew Verghis reaffirmed partnership, noting that two-thirds of the Bank’s $16 billion portfolio is implemented at state level .

Minister of State for Finance Doris Uzoka-Anite stressed that Nigeria must sustain at least 10 percent annual growth over the next decade to meet the target, while Chukwuma Soludo cautioned that the goal requires deepened reforms and productivity-driven growth .
