Probe Blames Overcrowding for Miners’ Deaths

An independent ministerial committee has established the causes of death of 33 persons (miners) who died in the custody of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Minna, Niger State.

CDA News Nigeria gathered that the committee’s chairman, Jonathan Kure, presented the report to the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on Tuesday.

The panel identified the causes of death to include “overcrowding, unsuitable detention conditions, failure of duty of care, [and] inadequate supervision.” According to the committee, the miners were exposed to extreme heat and dehydration due to overcrowding, which made it difficult for them to breathe and survive.

Furthermore, the committee revealed that the operation that led to the arrest of the suspects was conducted without an operational order or approval from the national headquarters of the NSCDC.

CDA News Nigeria will continue to monitor the situation for further developments and the government’s next steps regarding the findings.
