ABUJA – The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has expressed serious concerns about historic voter apathy in Anambra State, describing it as the “greatest enemy” to democracy ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.
INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan revealed that voter turnout has dramatically declined from 25.5% in 2013 to just 10.27% in 2021, despite the state having 2.8 million registered voters.
“Democracy only thrives when citizens actively choose their leaders,” Amupitan stated during a press conference in Abuja, warning that low participation poses a greater threat than violence to the electoral process.
The commission reported positive news with 98.8% of Permanent Voter Cards collected, while deploying security personnel and logistical support to ensure smooth voting across 5,718 polling units.
