ABUJA, NIGERIA — Nigeria has spent an estimated N32.8 trillion on defence over the past 15 years, reflecting the country’s sustained efforts to tackle insecurity and strengthen its military capacity.
Data compiled from budgetary allocations show that defence spending has consistently ranked among the highest in national expenditure, driven by persistent security challenges such as insurgency, banditry, and communal conflicts across various regions.
The Federal Government, through the Nigerian Armed Forces, has invested heavily in personnel, equipment procurement, intelligence operations, and logistics to combat threats to national security.
Analysts note that a significant portion of the funds has gone into fighting insurgency in the North-East, as well as addressing rising insecurity in the North-West and other parts of the country.
Despite the massive spending, concerns remain about the effectiveness of the investments, with critics pointing to continued attacks and security breaches in several states.
Experts have also highlighted issues such as procurement inefficiencies, lack of transparency, and the need for better oversight in defence budgeting.
However, government officials maintain that the funds have been necessary to sustain military operations and improve national security infrastructure over the years.
The debate over defence spending continues as Nigerians demand greater accountability and improved results from the substantial financial commitment to the sector.
