APGA Tells Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe to Vacate Seat Amid Suspension Dispute

UMUAHIA, NIGERIA — The Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has directed Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe to relinquish his Senate seat, asserting that his continued tenure lacks legal backing.

At a press briefing in Umuahia, state chairman Ambassador Sunday Onukwubiri, alongside senior party officials, said Abaribe was suspended—not expelled—from the party due to alleged anti-party conduct.

The party challenged the senator to provide evidence of his claimed expulsion and threatened to escalate matters to the Senate leadership if he refuses to resign voluntarily.

“This is not a witch-hunt. Senator Abaribe betrayed the party and should relinquish the mandate,” the APGA officials said. They maintained that Abaribe’s subsequent resignation was voluntary and accused him of attempting to mislead the public.

In response, Abaribe dismissed the claims, stating that his indefinite suspension effectively removed him from the party.

“When you place someone on indefinite suspension for over six months, what does that mean? It simply means the person no longer belongs to the party,” he argued.

The senator, who represents Abia South, emphasized that his electoral victory was rooted in personal support and questioned why his defection should attract consequences when others have acted similarly.

The disagreement highlights ongoing tensions within APGA and raises questions about the legal and political processes governing party mandates in Nigeria.
