IBADAN, NIGERIA – Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has held a closed-door meeting with former Kano State Governor and leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, fueling speculation about shifting political alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The meeting, which took place in Ibadan over the weekend, comes amid growing tensions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as internal reconciliation efforts continue to falter. Sources close to the governor indicated that discussions centered on broader political realignment and strategies for the upcoming polls.
Neither Makinde nor Kwankwaso disclosed details of their talks, but political observers suggest the meeting signals Makinde’s growing discontent with the PDP’s protracted leadership crisis and his desire to explore alternative coalition options.
The PDP has been grappling with internal divisions, particularly between the camp of the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, and other party stakeholders. Efforts by the party’s leadership to broker peace have yielded little progress, with some governors reportedly considering other political platforms.
Kwankwaso, who has maintained a strong political base in the North, is widely seen as a key player in any major coalition ahead of 2027. His NNPP has continued to expand its influence, positioning itself as a viable alternative for disenchanted politicians.
The PDP National Secretariat has yet to comment on the meeting, but party loyalists have expressed concern over the implications of a key governor engaging with opposition leaders.
