ABUJA, NIGERIA – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has brokered a landmark military assistance agreement with the French government, strengthening bilateral security cooperation amid escalating regional security challenges.
The deal, finalized after high-level talks between Nigerian and French defense officials in Abuja, will see France provide advanced military hardware, intelligence-sharing frameworks, and specialized training for Nigerian armed forces. The agreement also includes provisions for counterterrorism collaboration across the Sahel and Gulf of Guinea regions.
A statement from the Presidency described the pact as a testament to President Tinubu’s proactive diplomacy and his administration’s commitment to enhancing national security capacity.
“This partnership underscores Nigeria’s strategic importance and the confidence the international community has in President Tinubu’s leadership,” the statement read.
French officials confirmed the agreement, noting that the collaboration would focus on counterinsurgency operations, maritime security, and capacity building for Nigeria’s military and law enforcement agencies.
Defense analysts have hailed the deal as a significant boost for Nigeria’s fight against insurgency, banditry, and other security threats. The agreement is expected to take immediate effect, with the first batch of equipment and training programs scheduled to commence within the coming months.
