PAKISTAN VOWS TO ‘ERADICATE TERRORISM’ AS AFGHAN TRUCE NEARS END

ISLAMABAD, PAKISTAN – Pakistan has pledged to intensify its counterterrorism operations, vowing to “eradicate terrorism” from its soil as a fragile truce with militant groups along the Afghan border approaches its expiration date.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, addressing a high-level security meeting in Islamabad, declared that the government would not allow any safe havens for militants and that security forces had been given full authority to take decisive action against all terrorist outfits, regardless of affiliation.

“The nation expects nothing less than complete elimination of this menace,” Sharif stated, warning that no group would be exempt from the crackdown.

The renewed commitment comes amid growing concerns over the deteriorating security situation in Pakistan’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan provinces, where attacks have surged in recent months. The truce, brokered earlier with certain factions, has failed to yield lasting peace, prompting calls for a more aggressive military response.

Afghanistan’s interim Taliban government, which shares a porous border with Pakistan, has yet to comment on Pakistan’s renewed offensive. Cross-border militancy has long been a source of tension between the two neighbors.

Analysts warn that the expiration of the truce could trigger a fresh wave of violence, with both countries facing mounting pressure to secure their shared frontier.
