KADUNA, NIGERIA – A governorship aspirant of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Kaduna State, Tijjani, has been taken into custody by security operatives just hours after awarding scholarships to 1,000 students in the state.
The arrest, which occurred late Tuesday, has sparked controversy, with sources offering conflicting accounts of the motive. Some insiders suggest the detention may be linked to the ongoing trial of former Governor Nasir El-Rufai, who appeared in court earlier today on fraud charges, noting Tijjani’s alleged political connection to the ex-governor.
Other sources, however, claim the arrest is part of a broader strategy by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to silence emerging political threats ahead of the 2027 elections.
“The APC’s new strategy appears to be arrest and intimidation of anyone perceived as a political threat,” a source familiar with the matter said.
The ADC aspirant had earlier in the day been lauded for his scholarship initiative, which beneficiaries described as a timely intervention for underprivileged students.
Security agencies have yet to officially confirm the reason for the arrest or disclose any charges. Calls to the Kaduna State Police Command were unanswered as of press time.
