Controversy Erupts Over N600bn Capital Spending in Abia

UMUAHIA, ABIA STATE – A fierce debate has erupted over the visibility of Governor Alex Otti’s infrastructure projects, following a viral graphic challenging the impact of the administration’s reported N600 billion capital expenditure since 2023.

The graphic, which has sparked intense online discourse, questions why such a massive outlay has not translated into a commensurate number of high-value, landmark projects. It specifically challenges critics to name verifiable major projects completed each year—10 at N6 billion each for 2023, 20 at N10 billion each for 2024, and 30 at N10 billion each for 2025—offering a N5 million reward per year for credible proof.

Official budget figures show capital expenditure of N62.17 billion in 2023, N215.46 billion in 2024, and N322.02 billion in 2025, totaling approximately N600 billion. The administration has consistently allocated over 80% of its budgets to capital projects, prioritizing infrastructure.

The Otti government maintains it has rehabilitated over 600 kilometres of roads across the 17 local government areas, completed key projects including the Port Harcourt Road in Aba, the Umuahia-Uzuakoli-Abariba Road (45 km), Omenuko Bridge, and various schools and health centres. Supporters argue that much of the work involved cost-saving direct labour and rehabilitation of decayed infrastructure.

Critics, however, contend that the scale of spending should yield more visible mega-projects. The debate highlights broader questions about measuring infrastructure success and transparency in public reporting.
